A slower beginning

There is a moment, just before a mountain day begins, when everything feels possible. The boots are still clean. The map is folded. Somewhere beyond the last house, the path disappears into the trees.

The patience to wait, and the confidence to turn around. This is a field note about paying attention: to the landscape, to the people who know it, and to the small details that turn a journey into a memory.

In the mountains of Kosovo, the paths are more than lines between two places. They connect villages, summer pastures and generations. To walk them is to step into an ongoing story.

A different perspective

The first thing to leave behind is the need to get somewhere quickly. Stop at the bend in the path. Look back at where you started. Notice how the light changes the valley.

“The best part of a path is often the part you didn’t plan for.”

Travelling with care means making space for the people who live here. Ask before taking a photograph. Buy something from the village. Listen longer than you speak. These are small choices, but they change the shape of a visit.

A mountain day is not measured only in distance or altitude. Sometimes it is a shared meal, a conversation you weren’t expecting, or the sound of the wind after everyone has stopped talking.

What we carry home

We return with a few photographs and a little mud on our boots. But the things that stay are harder to pack: a different sense of scale, an unexpected kindness, a reason to come back.

Leave the place as you found it. Take your time. And when you tell the story, remember the people who made it possible.
